Woe, the End Is Nigh! April 2, 2007 R. Hutchinson (a world ruled by fossil fuels and fossil minds) 25 out of 103 found this review helpful
Oil is a finite resource. Demand is increasing, while no new oil is being created -- it was deposited millions of years ago. The countries with the most oil reserves are all in the Middle East -- Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, the UAE and Kuwait. Therefore, ongoing war in the Middle East is an easy prediction. Superstitious reliance on ancient texts is entirely superfluous.
What is harder to predict is whether we will use our expanded neocortex to make the transition to renewable energy in time to avert the worst scenarios of oil depletion, war and global warming. But whatever we do contributes to a self-fulfilling prophecy, so let's take action now, and make the prophecy we fulfill the one with the happy ending where our grandchildren inherit a planet worth living on! See my THE RENEWABLE ENERGY REVOLUTION list for more on what the future holds in store.
My WHO WOULD JESUS BOMB? list is full of suggestions for Christian action more productive than speculating on End Time prophecy, things like love and compassion for sisters and brothers who are suffering from poverty and violence. It is certainly not Christian to engage in cheerleading for war or mass murder.
Read President Carter's Book Instead! November 18, 2006 Loyd E. Eskildson (Phoenix, AZ.) 9 out of 52 found this review helpful
I read "Epicenter" with the expectation of obtaining objective, fact-based new insights on the troubled situation in the Middle East. Instead, the book was a cover-to-cover one-sided diatribe against all those who either already oppose Israel (eg. Iran), or those who may in the near future (eg. Russia).
Rosenberg is entitled to his opinion; however, simply "believing" does not make it true, nor does bias help resolve problems. Examples: Rosenberg is correct in pointing out Palestinian and Islamic faults; however, he "forgets" about Israel's - eg. taking Palestinian land, killing and otherwise abusing Palestinians, or the U.S.'s - unrestricted international support for almost EVERYTHING Israel does, as well as extensive financial and military assistance. Then as an afterthought, Rosenberg criticizes Palestinians for reacting to Sharon's sudden visit to a Jerusalem site revered by Muslims as well as Jews, accompanied by hundreds of Israeli police and his own hated reputation for prior slaughters.
Again, Russia (and perhaps China as well) may further complicate the Mid-East situation in the near future - on the other hand, the U.S. would do well to stop chastising Putin et al, especially after our "experts" severely weakened Russia's economy through advice that also allowed oligarchs to take advantage of increased democracy to loot much of the nation's wealth. Then there is the matter of our invading Iraq on false pretenses. Further, the rest of the world is well aware of the U.S.'s human rights abuses in Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, and various rendition locations, as well as the abuses of our election processes. As a result, our constantly scolding and lecturing them does not encourage cooperation in areas such as the Mid-East.
As for Iran - President Ahmadinejad does bring considerable cause for worry - but doesn't our invading Iraq on false pretenses create an initial cause for their concern, or our prior overthrow of their elected government to install the Shah? And what about Cheney/Bush refusing to negotiate with Iran pre-Ahmadinejad on its nuclear program (we wanted to dictate, not negotiate), or Bush's condemning Iran (Axis of Evil) only a month after it helped in Afghanistan? (The latest - Bush's refusal to ask Iran for help vs. Iraq until it ceases its nuclear program displays idiotic logic.) It was interesting to read that Ahmadinejad is looking for an Islamic version of the apocalypse, but how is this different from all the evangelicals in the U.S. that are trying to bring about a Biblical version?
Finally, Rosenberg gets around to the current situation in Iraq. "When one views Iraq's future through the third lens of Scripture, a much different picture emerges" - "strong, stable, and decisive central government" etc., etc. If only the Bible were as clear and credible (vs. other religions) as Rosenberg thinks!
Epicenter August 10, 2007 Gloria Moore (Washington) 5 out of 43 found this review helpful
The book starts out with some credibality from important people than just falls back into a Christian plea to come to the "Lord". Very unhappy with the book and would not recommend it to anyone except Christians.
Insane! August 18, 2008 I. E. Hernandez (Folsom, CA USA) 2 out of 35 found this review helpful
This book is insane!
If you are a believer in Biblical Prophecy to the point of being blind about anything logical, this book is for you!
There is little to this book accept the belief that everything in the Bible will come to pass and that the one true God, Jesus Christ, will rule the world above all other beliefs of other Gods.
Maybe I'm just stupid, but I feel this is the same sort of propaganda that all religions preach.....that their God is the only true God. In this case, Jesus Christ.
It's sad that the author doesn't skip a beat feeling sorry for the thousands of lives that will be sacrificed in a third world war, if we are so unfortunate to have one. On the contrary, he seems to be anxious for it to begin, as it will result in the second coming of Jesus Christ! It's like, "Oh well, people will die but it's OK because we will have Christ here to make everything right!"
I respect the fact that people have a right to believe what they want, but really....isn't this a little bit over the edge? It does seem that some religious people out there, calling themselves Christians, are just as nutty as the Terrorist that recruit their people to become suicide bombers, in the name of their God.
As for my belief, I think that the mad men of this century are all too willing to bomb each other until only the cock roaches will be left to decide if it was all worth it, and if they will see Jesus Christ, Allah or some other God return to earth.
The author is a fanatic and a nut....trust me on this one.
Sundayschool Armageddon February 9, 2007 Mad Chinaman (Zurich, Switzerland) 4 out of 72 found this review helpful
I'm sitting in sunday school with a bunch of frustrated
beeings - waiting for relief from the priest! This guy
is smart psychiatric, stinging salt in peoples wound and
then scare them with the end of the world and the only
salvation is...of course a WASP!
