The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language by Eugene H. October 29, 2002 motherofmany (Ohio United States) 20 out of 23 found this review helpful
Growing up in the church, I am used to the language of King James and the terminology within it, but my husband is a new Christian and feels overwhelmed by the thought of daily study when he has no idea what he is reading. This book has really been a blessing. Even I am seeing things in scriptures I never saw before because it is presented in the language I speak every day. We translate the Bible into so many languages, why not contemporary english? The only way to leave the text completely in the original wording is for all of us to learn Hebrew and Greek. A great tool for anyone who wants to understand God more.
Plan to read the whole book. March 30, 2007 J. Bearden (Texas) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
After much research on which version of The Message would suit me, I decided on this one. The yellow hued paper makes it easier to read. My eyes are 45 years old. I compared it to the white paper in the store and the yellow felt more relaxing, believe it or not.
I am one of the typical churchgoers who says "You know, I have been a Christian my whole life but have never read the Bible all the way through, or as much as I would have liked." How many of you have read Genesis about 10 times only to get bogged down in the begats?
The Message was purchased by me today and I have already read to page 36. Amazing for me. I will use this book at Sunday School to help me understand verses we are studying and also as a way to read the entire Bible. I am off to a great start!
The Message is Wonderful October 4, 2007 Byron J. Scott (Jesup, GA USA) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I am a United Methodist minister who has studied the Bible all my life. I have read every translation I could find plus the Greek New Testament. While the Message is not a true translation in that it is verse by verse. It is thought by thought taking several verses together and rewriting them. The contemporary vocabulary makes it easy to understand. I was able to get more meaning from the Old Testament Prophets than I ever had. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to study the Bible but does not have a deep background in the scriptures. The Mystery of God's Will: Living the Christian Life as Seen in Ephesians
Beautiful Message, Beautiful Book September 8, 2008 Gina Marie (The Natural State of America) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This not only contains the 'Message' of the God of Creation, it is wrapped in an oh so soft and lovely cover that it is double joy to read and understand! There are some issues here and there as to the translation itself from a scholarly point of view but for getting the true 'message', it is superior! Fun to read, delightful to hold, easy on the eyes, just a wonderful edition! It is good to have another translation available to compare with as the author suggests, just to round out the thought.
Lovely Binding March 10, 2007 H. Kabutz (Cape Town, South Africa) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
We decided to purchase The Message to use as a companion for our NIV translation, to help us understand God's Word better.
We were thrilled when the Bible arrived, with a beautiful sturdy leather cover, and also with numbered verses. The translation is one of the best I have seen, really explaining what is meant, rather than a direct word-for-word translation.
The other day, my 8 year old was listening to Psalm 2 with the NIV translation, particularly:
2 The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers gather together
against the LORD
and against his Anointed One. [b]
3 "Let us break their chains," they say,
"and throw off their fetters."
He asked what "fetters" were, and I had to admit that I had no clue either. Infact, I also did not really know what was meant by those two verses. The Message translates it like this:
Earth-leaders push for position,
Demagogues and delegates meet for summit talks,
The God-deniers, the Messiah-defiers:
"Let's get free of God!
Cast loose from Messiah!"
What a wonderful translation! What an amazing binding to top it off!
