God moves in mysterious ways... March 25, 2006 Pandra Selivanov (San Diego, CA USA) 29 out of 32 found this review helpful
I've read the reviews here and I'm impressed at the knowledge shown by many of the reviewers. I don't understand how they can be so smart and miss the whole point of The Message. Bible, paraphrase, collection of Bible stories, Peterson's personal opinion-whatever you want to call this book, it has the word of God coming through loud and clear. It's a book that says God loves us and it's a book that reaches people. What more do they want?
Personally I love the King James Version. I have a little checkbook sized copy I carry around with me, with all my favorite verses highlighted, and I read it every day. I love the language, the poetry, the imagery. I also love Shakespeare, but I don't let my love of the King James Version or Shakespeare cloud my judgement. There is a language barrier there. I believe it's a barrier worth overcoming, but some folks are not willing or able to make that effort. If they don't read Hamlet, it's not going to affect their immortal souls. If they miss God's word, they may not find salvation. It's as simple as that.
What's really funny about The Message and the negative reviewers is how they sound like the criticisms leveled at the King James Version when it first came out. Don't these intellectuals know there was a time when translating the Bible into English was banned by the church? Don't they know a lot of the King James Version New Testament is straight out of Tyndale's version, which was considered provocative and controversial? Don't they know the original Bible texts were not in English? There were a lot of people uneasy about the King James Version when it first came out-they didn't trust the common people to read the Bible for themselves. Looks like times have not changed. Personally, I agree with New Testament scholar J. Harold Greenlee when he says "No Christian doctrine...hangs upon a debatable text."
I like to read The Message side by side with the King James Version. I gave a copy of The Message to my son and he reads it and discusses the stories with me. When he has a question I am always ready with the King James Version. I recommend The Message to everyone I know-it reaches people and touches people and brings them to God.
Brings New Life and Understanding to Reading the Bible October 22, 2006 Alan W. Saltzman 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have read two different versions of both the Old and New Testaments. One or two chapters at a time are all I can absorb. With The Message Bible, I can read four or five chapters at a time. I have even cross-referenced the prose of The Message Bible with the other versions, and gained new insight and understanding that I had not achieved by reading before.
Excellent resource for a first-time reader of The Bible or for a new Christian.
I have given away three copies of The Message Bible to believers who have never heard of it before.
Compare With "The Living Bible" August 4, 2002 A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com (Glen Ellyn, IL USA) 29 out of 33 found this review helpful
Great paraphrases of the Bible provide good instruction. "The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language" is a solid instrument to grab hold of the Bible. Eugene Peterson has earned a reputation of being a studious, yet acessible scholar, presenting Scriptural truth before the everyday Christian.
Compare this with Tyndale House Publishers' "The Living Bible," the best known paraphrase, or, the lesser known but very popular "Amplified Bible." All reach a believer with different reading levels and expertise.
Read alone, "The Message" might not be a great move. That would be like hearing a preacher without having a Bible open to see if he knows what he's talking about.
Peterson has done Scripture justice by translating it directly from the original languages. It has not been filtered from Greek to Latin to English, but from Greek, and from Hebrew. This matters, as it keeps the reader closer to what was originally intended.
For the casual, or nonbelieving reader, this will help bring them up to speed on what the Bible is about. The Bible, in its various forms, is among the most purchased and least read, and the most criticized and least read. This will help those readers actually read it.
I fully recommend "The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language" by Eugene Peterson, and hope you buy it in tandem with another Bible, like the "New American Standard Version" or "New International Version." They are also in modern English.

I have come to understand Jesus January 2, 2005 Sarah Luciani (Phoenix, AZ) 29 out of 33 found this review helpful
First off, I want to apologize about my naivety regarding the bible. I have read some of the reviews, and many of the people that have written reviews have much to compare to in their understanding of the bible, and the translation.
I can only speak from my heart on this. I was never exposed to Christianity or the bible. My Grandmother was a Christian Scientist and she gave my mother her bible as a gift before she passed away. My mother then passed it down to me. I attempted to read it, and found it intimidating, scary, and "weird". I never understood this love people had for Jesus. It never made sense, and I found it frightening.
I decided I wanted to understand this whole Christian thing and was recommended to the Message. When I started reading, the format that it was written was so incredibly understandable and amazing that I haven't been able to put it down since. I actually started to quote things from the Message and began to see a new way of life. I found faith in Jesus' life. Maybe I am not scholarly in biblical history, or format or teachings, but I know this book has altered the way I think about God, Jesus, and life in general. This sounds incredible coming from a person that never believed in that stuff. I can find all ways to live a "right" life with meaning in the Message, and I can understand what I am reading. Maybe this book isn't for everyone, but if it can save a few hearts that never knew, it is worth every earned 5 stars. God has blessed the message.
