Awesome May 3, 2007 MindCreations (South Carolina) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I never could really pick up the Bible (King James version) and read it without becoming very confused and bored. I picked up this book several months ago and could not put it down. I could easily understand what was being said and what was going on and I kept wanting to read more. It affected me in a way that any other version just couldn't cut it. It's great for teens and the younger generation who just can't wrap themselves around the scriptures the way they are written in other versions.
What's also good is that when you are actually being able to read through the Bible smoothly and without trying to sit and understand what exactly this or that sentence means, you want to pick up that KJV or NIV version and compare it to what this one says.
People are concerned that "The Message" takes away from the Bible's originality. Well, I disagree. The Bible has been written and re-written many, many times. It has been translated many times. There is nothing wrong with reading it in a "contemporary language" versus any other version that is out there. People should feel NO shame in reading the Bible in a way that they are comfortable with, in a way that speaks to them personally. People have different opinions and people understand things differently. Not everyone can say that they believe everything in the same way, 100%. I think that the older generations are so used to the way that they grew up with Christianity that it is just shameful if the younger generation does it any differently.
"The Message" helped me with my faith and really grasping Christianity and understanding what all of it means. If it wasn't for this book I would have never picked up the Bible, I would have stayed uninterested in learning anything about Christianity. I am sure that others can say the same thing. I highly recommend it! :)
Understandable! January 18, 2007 A. Cooper (Florissant, CO) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful version of the greatest book ever. It is readable and understandable. It gives a fresh look at God's word to the people today especially young people. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to get to know the Bible better.
The Bible in the original "voice" it was written in! April 9, 2007 Out of the Box Beth (Chesapeake, VA United States) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
It might surprise many to know that the Bible originally didn't have chapters & verses. The remix includes chapters and verses which helps if you are used to having them, but it maintains it's fresh feeling. Peterson went back to the original Greek & Hebrew & translated the concepts into ideas that we can understand in this modern world. Reading the gospels in this format gives me a vivid picture of WHY the religious leaders were so angry at Jesus. He could be pretty harsh when the situation called for it. It also exposes His love in a deeper richer fashion.
If you have read the Bible so much it feels like a boring text book, or have never read it this would be my recommendation for a version to read.
Re-Read the Bible Like Never Before!! January 7, 2005 Todd Sullivan (Mount Vernon, WA) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
I had never heard of "The Message" until we switched churches and our new pastor was quoting scripture from this bible. from the very first moment the verses became alive and resonanted with me long after I read or heard them. Peterson does amasterful job in recreating the bible in modern toungue and making it come alive for the reader. This bible is a great sit down and read all the way through Bible. Stick with a study bible to do serious bible study. But for a refreshiong and uplifting change of pace, I recommend all believers read this translation.
In the language of the people May 6, 2005 Jared Bushman (Enid, OK) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
I love the Message. To all those who believe this is a liberal paraphase of the bible, I'd have to disagree. It is a paraphrase, but it's paraphase from the original Hebrew and Greek. Instead of translating the text literally (which often loses the original feeling and context of the text), it paraphrase in such a way so that you get the same feeling and context out of it that someone reading Hebrew or Greek would have 2000+ years ago. That's the point of the Message, to have the Bible in the language of the people. Many people don't realize that there are various forms of Greek (and Hewbrew too I believe). There was dialect spoke by the rich and those in government. There was one for the priests. And there was one for the common people. It was the dialect of the common people that the Bible was written in. It was written like that so that the common would be able to understand it. Although we find it rather hard to understand today, the King James Version was fairly easy to read for the common man when it was first printed. The Message is just newest version of the Bible the way it was meant to be printed, in the common man's language. It makes it accesible to everyone. At least give it a shot. It's not like it's that expensive.
