5 out of 5 stars Ministering to People from Fragile Families   November 14, 2009
Glenda Clare (Durham, NC)
There is power in reading the word of God! This edited translation of the Bible is MUST HAVE for those that minister to God's people who have been broken by life. Such people are frequently from fragile families - those who have been impacted by substance abuse, incarceration, interpersonal violence, child welfare/foster care, and homelessness. This Bible is power packed with resources specifically designed to help those made fragile by life to apply God's word to their circumstance.

5 out of 5 stars Life Recovery Bible   January 7, 2010
Bonnie Renshaw
I have owned many Bibles. I love this one. It helps me to see how each chapter applies to my life. I like the new living version. It makes it easy to read and yet it is accurate. I would recommend it to anyone but especially if you have an addiction or are co-dependent.

5 out of 5 stars A great Bible   February 5, 2010
Mark A. Buzard (Lisbon, Ohio)
I love the New Living Translation of the Bible, and the idea of this Bible intrigued me, so I grabbed it to review. It's different to review a Bible than a book - obviously, you're not critiquing the writing, but the type of Bible it is. That said.....

This Bible is geared for people in a 8 or 12-step program, but the notes and other features would be great for anyone who is struggling with some of the issues that people go into these programs for - addictions, abuse, etc.

The notes are solid and helpful, as are the recovery themes, devotionals, and recovery profiles. If a Bible can be called "neat", this is a neat Bible, and everything about it is well-done. Add to that the great and easy-to-read New Living Translation, and you have a great Bible for anyone who may be struggling with some issue, or anyone who just wants to understand the Bible better.

The Life Recovery Bible is available from Tyndale Publishers.

Thanks to Tyndale for the review copy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Study Bible   February 6, 2010
Ashley M. Mott (East Dubuque, IL)
The Life Recovery Bible from Tyndale house uses the New Living Translation and the principles behind Twelve Steps coupled with the power of the Bible to provide a complete faith-based manual for those struggling.

Many people may look at the twelve steps and only relate them to their creation with Alcoholics Anonymous, however, since this initial guide several organizations and help groups have created their own twelve steps. This Bible is largely geared toward AA but can help anyone who is struggling to overcome an addiction or merely lift out of a life quagmire.

I say this because this is not just a Bible with a few notes at the beginning and end pertaining to its additional theme. This Bible contains footnotes, devotionals, closer looks at people of the Bible, and introductions to the books of the Bible that revolve around the Life Recovery and Twelve Step theme. There are multiple devotional tracks with a handy reference guide in the front of the Bible.

The New Living Translation that this Bible is written in really helps the reader become more aware of the text and actually read the Bible as well as study it. There are no places where one has to read over a phrase several times merely to understand the phrase before even applying it in context. This is ideal for those who are using the Bible to help them accomplish a goal and put earthly vices behind them. It makes the Bible feel more relatable - more real and applicable to our everyday life and not the ancient world.

I think anyone who is in a Twelve Step program, or who is just looking to get past a rough spot in their life can find some hope within the Bible and pearls of wisdom in the supplementary content of The Life Recovery Bible.

Disclosure:

I received a review copy of this Bible from Tyndale House in order to provide an honest opinion. The thoughts expressed above are entirely my own.

5 out of 5 stars Well written   February 6, 2010
Randy A Brown
The Life Recovery Bible is a Bible with notes and features that are written specifically for people that are in need of recovery, or going through a recovery process. The notes are very applicable no matter what you are recovering from, including alcohol, drugs, or just about anything. It contains many articles and notes that are based on a 12-step recovery plan. The notes point out key elements from scripture that apply to the recovery process. It includes many helps and devotionals to build faith and confidence, and to help you understand your situation and how God can help you through it.

The free review Bible I received from Tyndale is (roughly) 6.5 x 9.25 in hardcover. It is made well and is money well spent.

The New Living Translation is very readable. I would recommend the NLT more for reading than study because it is a `thought for thought' translation rather than a `literal' translation, but as a reading Bible the NLT is great and it serves the purpose of this Bible well.

The text is very easy to read, though it is not red-letter. I'm not sure, but it looks like maybe an 8 or 8.5 point font. It contains bold headings within the text, which are really nice.

The features are what make this Bible really shine. Features include notes, 12-step devotionals, prayer devotionals, applicable profiles of Biblical characters, topically arranged reflections, prominent recovery themes, outlines, book histories, topical index, devotional index, book introductions, a user's guide, and a 12-step comparison chart that includes the 12-step plan, help from the scriptures, and 8 recovery principles.

The notes are at the bottom almost every page, just like other Study Bibles, and are well written and appropriate.

The 12-step recovery system is based on the Alcoholics Anonymous system. The steps take you through the Bible to various situations that apply to the recovery process.

I really like the biographies. They include outlines that include strengths, weaknesses, lessons, and key verses.

There are two types of devotionals that link through the Bible: recovery principle devotionals that include topics such as love, hope, forgiveness, faith, and many others, and serenity prayer devotions. It is worth buying this Bible for its devotionals alone.

Each book of the Bible begins with a simple outline, introduction, and recovery theme, and ends with reflections that include many insights into the lives of the people and problems they faced.

This is an excellent Bible for someone going through recovery of any kind. It even has something for you if you are not in recovery, such as the devotionals and biographical insights. With devotional topics such as faith and love, everyone can find something helpful in this Bible. For someone in recovery, there's nothing better. 5 out of 5 stars!
