increases understanding June 30, 2009 Rufus Brown 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Daily Bible is a step up from what I was reading (incrreased understanding because of the chronological order and author's notes), however, I would be into November before I covered any New Testament, so I augment this book with readings in the NT from another source.
Very Convenient January 30, 2010 M. Dogoe (Lubbock, TX) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Every year, I make a resolution to read the bible everyday until the end of the year so when I found this bible, I thought it will make a difference. I had purchased the journal earlier but without the Daily Bible, the reading was cumbersome because I needed to open many different books and chapters before reading the texts for the day. The Daily Bible makes it way easier to read because all the texts are together.
Needless to say, I have broken my resolution because I have missed so many days in January. Every day is a struggle.
Altered Version of NIV January 2, 2010 Daniel Rainey (Tuscaloosa, AL United States) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
While the whole of the NIV is in this book as far as I can tell, Commentary is inserted into the biblical text and not clearly marked. I had to check this book against authorized versions to catch this. Genesis 2 is the first instance of this you will see if you start at the beginning. Here Smith's description of portions are in CAPS and it breaks up the readability of the book. It is like having an email or texting exchange with someone in which the effect is something akin to yelling out phrases while you are talking to someone.
It is a shame too as the organization makes it quit readable if you were to not introduce new material INTO the bible itself. I am sure the intentions of the author, and by that I mean Smith, were to be helpful. But there are certain expectations that come with publishing a bible, and full and clear disclosure is an expectation. If you believe what is in any version of the bible, you will understand the importance of not even having the appearance of adding to the bible or altering it.
I have no problem reading The Message or any of the other paraphrased bibles because I understand they are not meant to be an accurate translation. Nor do I hold one version of the bible to be The One and all others to be sacrilege.
This book is clearly meant to be helpful to a reader who wants to read the Bible through in a year. Because I cannot just read this book without having to seperate constantly what is Smith's words and what are the NIV's, I recommend you find another. Unless you don't mind a man speaking to you and letting you believe it is God speaking to you.
