High Quality, Easy Listen February 10, 2010 Jonathon D. Burns (USA) Word of Promise - New Testament
Previously I have reviewed Word of Promise: Next Generation. That audio set featured voices of many teen stars and was aimed at the teenage audience. This audio set is the New Testament (as was the other one) but features "mature" voices such as Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ) as the voice of Jesus. It is presented in the New King James Version. In addition to vocal acting for the many people, it also features a musical score and sound effects which add to the ambience of listening. It is a 20 CD set and comes with an bonus DVD featuring "behind the scenes."
On the whole I enjoyed this audio Bible. The quality was very high and easy on the ears. Hearing adult voices for the various roles put it a step above Next Generation for me as well. Though I would prefer to sit down and read a Bible, I can see where this would be of great help. If you travel a lot, you can play it through a CD player or rip it to your computer and play it on your mp3 player. If your vision is going, it may be relaxing to hear a collection of voices read scripture.
Of course, this like any audio book can easily be blocked out if you are distracted easily. I sometimes found the sound slowly turning into a soft whisper as my attention shifted elsewhere. On the whole, though, a great product.

The Bible in Action February 12, 2010 Ashley Eddins (ARLINGTON, TX, US) I am a visual learner and I just have to say that these CD's are wonderful. They put the bible in a today's setting. It is so hard for younger teens and adults to comprehend the bible. I just love how this is so descriptive for the listener. It is so exciting and interesting that you could listen for hours. I have been listening to this in my car to and from work every day since I got the set. It is easy listening and great for older folks who may be ill and cannot read. This is a wonderful gift and will bless hearts. It comes in a handy zippered case to keep them safe for many years to come. The Word of Promise New Testament would be a welcome addition to anyone.
Better than most February 19, 2010 Jeremy Moore (Tennessee) I enjoyed this. I have several audio bibles and spend a lot of time in the car so when I added this one to the collection and started listening to it I was pretty pleased.
I'm not crazy about the New King James translation, but the dramatization was value added without being over the top or distracting.
If you are in the market for a good, high quality audio bible I'd definitely recommend this one and I'll soon be checking out the old testament that they released in october 2009.
All in all a good addition to any audio book library as long as you don't mind picturing Marisa Tomei the next time you visualize Mary Magdalene.
Word of Promise New Testament is a great experience... February 23, 2010 V. Spencer (Oklahoma) Overall I very much enjoyed the Word of Promise New Testament Audio Bible. I enjoy the way that my children wanted to hear it. I love that I am experiencing and hearing the Bible as if it is a surround sound experience. I do not have surround sound but compared to reading my Bible quietly or to the children the audio CD's bring it to life as if it is all around you not only in you. I also enjoy that it is a New King James Version. This is not the typical translation for me. I usually use the New Living, the American Standard, and occasionally the NIV. However, I love learning from all the versions as well as comparing all the versions. I LOVE Bible study and look forward to hearing different translations, in fact I have a strong desire to learn Hebrew for this reason! When I first received this Bible I actually thought, and am embarrassed to admit; "oh great, the NKJV" because to me it makes the word seem stiff and un-natural to me, like the language of yesteryear trying to reach a child taught a new English language. However, the radio theater style makes the language more natural and easier to understand even for my kiddos.
While the Word of Promise New Testament Audio Bible is full of a `star-studded' cast of characters I felt that the acting and emotion in voice was lacking at times and this is my biggest complaint about it. The voice of the Narrator was amazing as are most of the other voices. However, the voice of Jesus was so dry and emotionless. I am sure that some people may even see Jesus as a straight speaking man that is always cool and calm. I assure you that at one point in my faith journey I saw Him as such. However, as I have grown in my faith I have seen Him in a different light. For instance, when Jesus overturns the tables in the synagogue in John, I use to think he was simply making a point void of emotion. But how could he? He was human and son of God. Loving His father he was appalled at what the merchants were doing in His Father's house. It would have been like us seeing someone spray painting the inside of a church with horrible language. Would we be able to react to them without any change in tone or feeling of voice? No! While we would (hopefully) not be screaming we would be strong in tone. Jesus is sharing the Word, the Word that He was sent to give. He dies for us and is here to teach the most valuable lessons ever. Think about it, would he be able to be monotone? Probably not! Track 8 on the John CD brings a bit more emotion to Jesus and his word but then it instantly goes back to the meek and mild tone when we get to track 9. At times it is so unnatural sounding to me that it is hard to tell that the voice is suppose to be Jesus talking.
While I would recommend this Bible to others for the radio-theater aspect and the delightful way it draws you in to hearing and experiencing God's word in a different way; I am still on the lookout for an audio Bible that brings the radio theater experience with a more natural emotion filled portrayal especially from the voice of Jesus. Had I not received this from Thomas Nelson Publishers I would have been tempted to request a refund to try a different radio-theater audio Bible. However, because it is the NKJV and I very much enjoyed having a version that I do not usually use I would have had to be sure that I did not want this at all before doing that. Also, Jesus is not present in the entire New Testament and so the annoyance of the actor portraying Jesus' word was not there from Acts on. The books of the New Testament that do not have the actor portraying Jesus in them were tremendously enjoyable such that it did make the entire product worth it to me. So much that I would love to have this version in the Old Testament too!

A Hope Mostly Fulfilled February 25, 2010 Robert R. Hostetler (Hamilton, OH USA) Have you ever met a radio personality, someone whose voice was very familiar to you but whom you had never actually seen, and your first thought was, "You don't look ANYthing like I pictured you?"
Well, that's always been my problem with Biblical paintings, movies, and television--especially those that depict Jesus. They just don't look or sound....authentic. And, while I know this will sound a little snobbish, the problem has gotten worse since I've become a frequent visitor to the lands of the Bible.
Still, I had great, great hopes for The Word of Promise Audio New Testament, a multi-voiced, scripted dramatization of the New King James Version (NKJV) which features a star-studded cast of actors, an original music score, and incredible feature film quality sound effects. The cast Includes Jim Caviezel as the voice of Jesus, Stacy Keach (Paul), Lou Gossett, Jr. (John), and many others.
It was a hope mostly fulfilled.
I expected the familiarity of the voices to be a distraction; it wasn't. And, while some actors' performances definitely outshone others, the score and sound effects added consistently to the meaning and enjoyment. Ultimately, my only complaint--and then only occasionally--was the all-too-typical melodrama some of the actors added to the text.
If you've never listened to an audio version of the Bible, I recommend this version. It will bring the Word of God to life in a new way.
