God's Story in History December 2, 2008 Susan K. Stewart (California) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
Many resources are available to read the Bible in chronological order. And, although it is interesting to read David's psalms along with his life story, it sheds little light on God's work in history.
The Chronological Study Bible from Thomas Nelson illuminates God's story by placing the inspired Scripture in the context of the history of the world. God's hand is seen, not just for those of the Judeo/Christian faiths, but for all of the humanity.
A timeline across the top of each page, cultural notes throughout, and transitional comments, along with the text being placed in historical order make this a true study Bible. In addition to in-text notes, there are over 200 pages of endnotes. Since this Bible is not arranged in the traditional order, the included index of Scripture passages is a plus I haven't seen in other chronological Bibles.
With the sturdy hardcover and high-quality paper, this is a study Bible that will remain on my shelf for years of use.
Decorative and Informative, A Great Study Bible March 17, 2009 Steven Rossi (New Jersey) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I recently received The Chronological Study Bible for review from Thomas Nelson. I've read a good portion of it, and I've enjoyed it greatly. I'd like to give three short observations:
First, this Bible is extremely decorative. Not only does it have pictures throughout of relevant contemporary and ancient subjects, but it colorfully presents numerous notes and side-commentaries. I (somewhat naively) enjoy simply flipping through the pages. I'm sure that other, more ornate Bibles exist, but for its kind this study Bible offers a wonderful design.
Second, its organization. I understand that the editors of chronological Bibles struggle in the process of deciding in what order to place the books. Those in charge of this project chose to order the text with the historical passage of time, matching events with when they would have taken place historically through the epochs of time. The introductory material explains this decision in depth, but I must add that I found its order to be more than pleasing.
Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed the notes found on nearly every page. This study Bible contains relevant information which both comments directly on the biblical text and offers insight into the culture in which the text was written. Frequently (perhaps too frequently) the reader is pointed to timelines which continually attach a time period to the text. Archaelogical and cultural references are prominent. Detailed explanations of various sections create an overarching connection throughout the whole of the Scriptures. This edition presents tons of information.
All that said, I highly recommend this study Bible. I believe that it will serve as a valuable resource in any collection, and it is certainly a delight to read.
Great Study Bible! November 10, 2008 L. Germany (Ridgeland, MS United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I am a Bible "scribbler". As I study, listen to sermons or discover new words from God, I write notes in my Bible. Because of this habit, I find it necessary to purchase a new Bible occasionally so that I can study fresh and new. If I don't do this then I will find myself studying the same things over and over in the same way.
The Chronological Study Bible appealed to me when sent to me by the Thomas Nelson family because it was presented in chronological order or rather, the historical order in which they actually happened. Because of my historically challenged mind, I was anxious to dig into the Bible and read things in this perspective.
As soon as I opened the Bible, I was immediately drawn in. This is what a Study Bible is supposed to be.
Some of the features which I found incredible were:
New King James Version - I am very picky about the versions I ready and study so I was very glad that this study Bible arrived in NKJV.
The top of each page is labeled with the time periods.
"Time Capsule" boxes give you newspaper type headlines of historical events.
Everything is arranged in chronological order which means this isn't the Bible you want to take to church, but when you are ready events, such as the birth of Jesus, you have all of the accounts in one place.
I loved how visually pleasing the entire Bible is not only in the layout, but in all of its illustrations, maps, and pictures of artifacts.
Explanation of world history and culture
"Daily Life Notes" which explained how people lived in Bible times
Understanding the culture, history and being able to read things in chronological order made so many more things fall into place for me.
I would highly recommend this Bible for anyone in your life who needs a study Bible, who loves history or has never explored the Bible from this perspective.

Couched in the easy to read New King James version, Publisher Thomas Nelson offers this treasure trove of study helps is a must-have for any theological student, pastor or bible teacher. Whether doing a group study or individual study, the reader holds the key to deeper understanding of passages as well as the bible as a whole. It is very easy to understand and puts into perspective the Word in a way that feels more devotional than textbook.
Did you know that the prophet Amos was a sheepbreeder and the "tender of sycamore fruit"? Seems the fruit of a sycamore is a kind of a fig and that small cuts must be made in each of the young fruits to improve the quality of the mature fruit. It was considered a low status job and made the message that he had to give even more importance. It is notes like this all throughout the book that give this unique tool it's appeal.
With this tool, the reader is easily able to explore many different perspectives and elements of life in the day that the bible was written. I highly reccomend this book as a vital part of any Christian's biblical tool belt!
Great Job on the Chronology and Notes! March 3, 2009 William A. Guice (Spring Hill, TN) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
A few months back I received a copy of the NKJV Chronological Study Bible from Thomas Nelson. The NKJV is not a translation that I normally use but I am a big fan of chronological Bibles since we are often not very Biblically literate & often have a tendency to flatten the scriptures to all one time period.
This translation from the very beginning lets you know that there has been some thought put into not only the chronological order but in visually communicating this in a number of ways. The outer cover and table of contents give the reader a picture of the Biblical story broken down into epochs. Most of the epochs are labels that you will recognize but in the table of contents these are broken down further with dates and major movements of characters and groups in the Bible. The opening pages also include time charts and time and time panels. All of these tools at a basic level help you see and hopefully grasp the scope of the Biblical story.
Each epoch has an a great introductory section which includes historical background information along with theological insights. Visually the notes that are placed in the Bible are not all at the bottom of the page like many study Bibles but in this one the notes are set off colorfully (but not to much) and include notes, charts and maps right on the pages where you need them when you are reading. At the top of each page you are given dates as well as scripture references. I feel like the designers have done a great job of helping to remind the reader where the stories are set in time. Time capsules are placed throughout the Bible and they give you a nice chart with dates of rulers, movements and events that surround the stories that you are reading.
The notes that are included in the scriptures themselves like the introductory notes are very helpful. I love that they include archaeology, history, theology and science in the descriptions of the passages and of what is going on in the surrounding world. I also love that the Bible gives an epoch to the intertestamental period (the time between the testaments). This is a part of our story that most believers don't know much about but is critical in understanding the context of the new testament writers and even to things that Jesus confronts in his ministry. The Bible also includes a listing of cultural and historic topics for study that point the reader to Biblical stories that address them. This is followed by an awesome glossary of historical terms and people. The concordance looks to be normal for a Bible of this type.
Once again, I don't usually use the NKJV but I really like this Bible and it has been fun to have on the shelf. If you are interested in history or science in the Bible this is a handy version to have around. If you are a person who loves to read the Bible and see God's grand story that has run for centuries, this Bible is for you. If you are looking for a chronological version, I would grab this one. I have two other chronological Bibles and this one is of far higher quality than those.
