3 out of 5 stars Was expecting a real leather cover   December 4, 2009

Content is good, however the item description is misleading. It was advertised as Leather cover, but the actual cover was a budget faux leather.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bible for daily use   September 1, 2009
Stanley Lloyd
I've tried several different Bible translations and settled on the NAB and am quite happy with it. The most important thing to me in a Bible is clear readability a minimum amount of paraphrasing, and the NAB is the best Catholic Bible I've found along those lines. The language is very clear for the modern reader, yet it isn't (as far as I can tell) tarnished by over-paraphrasing or politically correct revisionism. Translations like the RSV are more eloquent in some ways, but they include occasional archaic words or phrases whose meaning isn't as clear to me. The NAB appears to be more of a literal translation than most of the other Catholic translations I've seen. While no one translation is divinely inspired, I think there's something to be said for a Bible using a pronoun instead of a proper noun when the Holy Spirit inspired the original author to do so. Importantly, the NAB is used in the liturgy, and I prefer having a Bible with the same translation for deeper study.

This version is chock full of aids to help in your Bible study. I find some of them very useful, such as the backgrounds that add important context and the headings which help me find key sections when skimming around. The index is helpful as well, but doesn't always have the specific term I'm looking for. When searching for an exact word or phrase, I find it works better to do an electronic search of the NAB translation in my smart phone (a totally separate NAB product), as it's quicker and more thorough. However, the St. Joseph Edition's index can be more helpful for general topic areas. There are many footnotes throughout this Bible which give additional information. Some of these are quite helpful, but others seem to unnecessarily prevent wider interpretations that would still be 100% consistent with Church teaching. Overall, the footnotes appear to be from a small group of scholars and not the universal Church- with that in mind, though, you can still find some helpful info there.

The physical book itself is sturdy and beautiful, giving God's Word the dignity it deserves. The font is nice and not too crowded. I have the red leather-like cover edition with gold leaf pages. I added Bible chapter tags that have gold leaf and it makes for a beautiful combination.

1 out of 5 stars NAB Translation is fine BUT this version is blasphemous!!!   August 14, 2009

HI, this is a beautiful bible, too bad the publisher had to ruin it by inserting a completely liberal, blasphemous 'How to read the bible" section. It is truly disgusting and I'm surprised other reviews have not commented. I guess they have not read that section. The whole essay can be labeled as an attack on the bible, I will only highlight a few more obvious issues. Anything in quotations is a direct quote after which I've added some of my comments;

1- Page 23 "We do not possess a biography of Jesus, it is difficult to know whether the words or sayings attributed to Him are written exactly as He spoke them." So already the writer is creating doubt for the reader!

2 - Page 18 Biblical prophets are compared to "Negro" musicians in the following "We would never have produced our jazz music....without our Negro communities that are so sensitive to music rhythm.." What the heck is this even supposed to mean? Besides, get with the times!

3 -Page 22; Miracles did not necessarily happen, some writers of the bible just put them in to make a point

4- Page 17 "...for Christians, the bible is inspired by God" insinuating that this is only our belief but is not necessarily true

5- Page 33, In the illustration God is show as a man. This is hardly appropriate since God had even told Moses that no man shall see his face for any man that sees God's face shall die (exodus Ch 33:20))

6- Page 24 "Most scientists hold that the human species has developed somehow from lower kinds
of life" Directly contradicting biblical teaching that God created man

7- Page 18, regarding the book of Judges "..the conclusions which attributed all those atrocities to the command of God were imperfect..." The Church teaching is that all of this was the work of God. This directly challenges the Church teachings

8- Page 17 In answering 'why we should read the bible' "...many of our customs and often our outlook on life...is conditioned by Judeo-christian heritage...you can not possibly understand them without knowing this Judeo-Christian classic; the bible." So the bible is primary a piece of 'classic literature" ??? It then goes on to talk about other 'classic literature'. They should have simply stated that we should read the bible because it is the word of God. But it is obvious the author of this ultra liberal intro does not really believe in the bible.

9- Page 19 "The bible is mans word and God's word..." What does that say? We are left to try to figure out what to believe and what not to believe? The Church teaches that the bible is the complete work of God!!

10- Page 19 Talking about the composition of the bible; "A major disadvantage is that these books are not put together systematically as the books in a modern library." How rude! So the bible has a major disadvantage??? It is imperfect??? This is so anti-Christian

11- Page 20 It talks about how angels, clouds, fire, earthquakes, thunder, war and calamities are all just figures of speech! So another words these things did not really happen! Seems according to this intro there is very little to believe as truth in the bible!!!

12- Page 20 Relating to the Prophets of Israel it states; "These were groups of ecstatic persons...Music and dance heightened their exotic and vaguely exotic religious activities." How rude! These are holy biblical prophets he is degrading! These prophets were chosen by God!

13- Page 10 Exodus Ch 9:27 TYPO "Sinnned" instead of "Sinned" not a big deal but this should have been corrected by the publisher since the book has a copyright date as far back as 1970

There is just too many attacks on our faith to even list on this review! It goes on and on and on undermining the divinity and authenticity of the bible. Catholic Book Publishing should be ashamed to reprint this 'How to read the bible' garbage in the Saint Joseph Edition.

Some people seem to be OK with the intro in this bible. I'm criticizing it from the perspective of faithfully following Church teaching. Since most Catholics seem to pick and choose what they want to believe, even relating to Church doctrine, then I can understand why they may not have as much of an issue with this. For those of you who try to faithfully follow the doctrine of the Church and don't want that doctrine attacked, then I'm sure you will not desire to have some liberal scholars useless instructions on how you should read your bible sewn into your binding!

Regarding the NAB translation itself; Some people claim that it is "rejected" by the Vatican. This is not true. It is not approved for use in Liturgy because the revised Psalms and New Testament contains some inclusive language, but the bible is accepted for personal bible study for Catholics. The bible has an imprimatur verifying that it morally and accurately reflects Church teachings. It will read slightly different though then what you hear in Church liturgy.

I would not confuse the NAB with liberal, politically correct, fully inclusive bibles such as the NRSV. I'm very sensitive to inclusive language and myself will not tolerate it in my bibles, however I feel that in the case of the NAB it is mild and is more in line with an accurate translation then being for the purpose of being politically correct. If you read Genesis in the NAB it is somewhat traditional, compare that to the NRSV which I find distracting and not even accurate because they changed so many gender related verses.

I don't have serious issues with the NAB, in my opinion it is perfectly OK for Catholics to read, since this is what the Church says also then who can argue with it? Although I believe that even the NRSV is approved for personal bible study by the Church. If you want a beautiful, 100% Catholic and traditional bible and enjoy the eloquence of Old English then get the Douay-Rhiems from Barnabas press which is also available from Amazon.

On a final note, one must also remember to spend more time reading and enjoying the bible then comparing and critiquing it into the ground. If you search the internet and see the lengthy discussions of people arguing which bible translation is 'best' it gets kind of ridiculous! Even the NRSV with all of it's inclusive language would be better to read then nothing. If it works for you and it is approved by the Catholic Church then enjoy!
