Harmonic and Insightful January 15, 2009 J. Olds (Indiana) The Word of Promise: The Gift of Psalms arrived on my doorstep today, and I immediately tucked the devotional book away to read during my work break, and popped in the first CD to listen to on the way to work. Now, the day has passed, and the last few Psalms are winding down.
After listening to the kid's NT edition of Word of Promise, I had high hopes and expectations for this volume. Michael York narrates, which here means reading the devotions. The voices used to record the Psalms are outstanding. You can feel the emotions of the Psalms through their voices.
The interesting thing about Hebrew poetry is that it is not always rhymed. Rather, it is concerned with parallelism of thought, rather than language. As such, the Psalms can be translated into any language and still retain their majesty, especially in the so regal (yet understandable) New King James Version.
The devotions themselves were short and concise, yet adequately explain the passage and practically apply it to today. The book is beautifully bound and covered, with the 3 CDs being tucked into a special holder on the back page. It is certainly something I would recommend for anyone who likes listening to the spoken Word.
Beautiful and Wonderfully done! January 16, 2009 Karis These CD's were absolutely wonderful! From the moment I pressed play I fell in love with the music and the beautiful voices. That they were read in the New King James Version was an extra plus, the NKJV is such a wonderfully beautiful version of the Bible that it made it so nice to listen to. The devotionals were a nice addition as well. I learned so much from reading them and the prayers at the end of each were great. I wondered how I would like listening to so many different people read Psalm but it was actually really nice. You know how there are some people who you could just listen to forever? That's how I felt listening to all the readers. Michael York does an excellent job reading the devotionals, and it was nice to hear different voices read the actual Psalm. It was also cool to be listening and then I'd perk up and exclaim "It's Samwise!" or some other readers voice that I recognized. The Gift of Psalms comes in a beautiful book, with the Psalm on one side of the page and the devotional on the other. All on nice shiny paper, with pretty designs and fonts. I cannot wait to listen to them all over again and I will be recommending this to all my friends. Definitely 5 stars.
I love this book January 16, 2009 RebelReader (U.S.A) The Gift of the Psalms Devotional wisdom from 50 of the best loved psalms, is the best devotional of the Psalms I have ever read. The Psalms are from the New King James Version, one of my favorite translations. Very poetic & easily memorized. The Devotionals help you to meditate on the meaning of the Psalms & to think of how you can apply them to your daily life. The prayers at the bottom of each devotional are beautiful. The book it's self is well made, with the CD case made into the back of the book. (on the inside of the book, which keeps your CD's nice & safe) This book reminds me of a journal because of it's size, weight, and feel. Inside the book: 101 pages (Not including pages for notes in the back). I love the background design of the pages, looks like old parchment. The Paper it's self is thick & sturdy, wont tare easily . The format of the book is very nice with the Psalm on one page & the devotional on the other.(Side by side) Under the devotional is a short prayer. This book comes with 3 CD's which is titled: Dramatic Audio Theater Presentation of Selected Psalms. The CD's cover 30 of the Psalms from the book. Very nice for listening to in the car or upload them to your MP3 player.
Beautiful and Rich January 16, 2009 Tracy Keck (Sunny, AZ) I recently received The Gift of Psalms Devotional (Word of Promise series), and I must say that it is aptly named - it is a gift indeed! The book itself is high quality and truly beautiful, complete with a notes section at the end - though I'll use a notebook for that purpose. The pages are heavy and somewhat reminiscent of parchment paper. This wonderful book even smells good!
Featuring 50 beloved Psalms and accompanying devotionals and prayers, written by Lori Jones, this book promises to be loved by many. You'll enjoy going through the pages again and again. The Scriptures are all taken from the New King James Version, which is very pleasing.
In addition, there are three amazing CD's featuring top Hollywood actors, who dramatize 30 of these amazing Psalms. Featuring Jason Alexander, Joan Allen, Sean Astin, Richard Dreyfuss, Harry Hamlin, Marcia Gay Harden, Stacy Keach, Jesse McCartney, Malcolm McDowell, Gary Sinise and Michael York. The CD's are encased at the back of the book, making it easy to keep them together. Listening to them is a joy and a great way to internalize the Word of God.
I love this book and recommend it to anyone who loves the Word of God - especially the Psalms. It would make a great gift to give to others too.
The Gift of Psalms January 17, 2009 Love to read (Little Rock, AR, USA) The Gift of Psalms is a wonderful addition to the Word of Promise products. I am personally very excited that Word of Promise has done something from the Old Testament. The book is good by itself because the devotionals are high quality and thought provoking, but having the 3 CD's as an accompaniment is very good icing on the cake.
So first, the pros of this book/CD set:
1. Instead of just having the text from the Bible, there is an actual devotion and specific prayer for each Psalm. This is an improvement from "The Word of Promise From Jesus: Dramatic Passages from the Gospels" which only featured scripture text.
2. There is a space for notes in the back of the book. This is a huge plus for me, because I love making notes. An idea for future versions would be to have a note column on each page rather than a few pages in the back. But still, this is great!
3. The Psalms are diverse. It's not just the Psalms that make you feel warm and fuzzy, but ones like Psalm 51 which brings you to a heart of repentance and has you on your face in tears, pleading that the Lord will keep you and forgive you.
The cons of this book/CD set:
1. It doesn't do all the Psalms. I know that would be very time consuming...but I'd like to see them all done with devotionals.
2. There are no more cons!
In sum, this is a very nice thing to have in your library. I'm very glad that I have it and I am even more excited at the prospect of having the entire Old Testament from the Word of Promise series.
